Celebrating our Author Videos: Key Themes in Author Videos
As we close out another banner year at JMIR Publications, we’re taking a moment to celebrate the incredible growth of our YouTube community. In 2025, our mission to make high-impact research accessible reached new heights through our video series: Decoding Digital Health: Author Stories.
With 165 new videos submitted by our authors this year, this series has become a vital platform for researchers to break down complex studies into understandable, real-world insights. By moving beyond the printed page, our authors are humanizing their data and ensuring their discoveries resonate with clinicians, patients, and the broader digital health community.
Based on our record-breaking submissions, here are the five key themes that defined the year.
Key Themes That Defined 2025
1. The "LLM Revolution" in Clinical Training and Practice
2025 was the year Large Language Models (LLMs) moved from theoretical curiosity to practical clinical integration. Our authors explored how AI can act as a "third agent" in the exam room, aiding in everything from nursing education to automated diagnostics.
- Spotlight Video: AI in Nursing Education: A Concept Analysis – Western University's Julia Harrington discusses the role of LLMs in creating personalized learning experiences while navigating the essential ethical guardrails for the next generation of caregivers.
2. Precision Behavioral Health & Personalized Mental Health
We are seeing a decisive shift away from "one-size-fits-all" medicine. The research in 2025 emphasized Precision Behavioral Health (PBH), using digital tools to tailor mental health support to the unique clinical profile of each individual.
-
Spotlight Video: Precision Behavioral Health: A New Model for Mental Healthcare – Dr. Samuel S. Nordberg from Reliant Medical Group shares findings on how PBH models integrate digital interventions directly into primary care settings for better patient outcomes.
3. Inclusive Innovation: Bridging the Digital Divide
A major priority this year was ensuring that digital health doesn't leave the anyone behind. From older adults to minoritized communities, the 2025 cohort focused on inclusive design and the specific needs of sometimes underserved populations.
- Spotlight Video: Digital Health & Older Adults: Bridging the Gap – Nisar Ahmed from the University of Manchester highlights the stressors and accessibility barriers faced by older adults from minoritized ethnic groups, offering a roadmap for more equitable digital primary care.
-
Spotlight Video: More In Action: A Mobile App for Physical Activity in Older Adults – Kim Daniels from PXL University showcases how user-centered design leads to high satisfaction and better healthy behavior adoption in aging populations.
4. Digital Infodemiology & Social Media Advocacy
Social media has matured into a critical piece of public health infrastructure. Researchers are no longer just observing social platforms; they are using them for real-time disease surveillance and large-scale patient advocacy.
- Spotlight Video: Social Media and the Future of Arbovirus Surveillance – Instituto Nacional de Infectologia Evandro Chagas researcher Carolina Melo explains how digital tools are revolutionizing how we track outbreaks of Dengue and Zika by identifying "rumors" and trends faster than ever before.
- Spotlight Video: Unveiling Dementia Advocacy Strategies on Social Media – Juanita-Dawne Bacsu, a researcher from Thompson Rivers University, breaks down how lived experiences shared online can dismantle the stigma surrounding dementia and empower policymakers.
5. Lifestyle as Digital Medicine
The intersection of technology and daily habits dominated the conversation this year. Whether it's the impact of diet on chronic conditions or the link between physical activity and mental recovery, authors are using digital tools to prove that lifestyle is the ultimate intervention.
- Spotlight Video: The Secret to Managing Seborrheic Dermatitis Through Diet – Emily Woolhiser explores the surprising link between nutrition and dandruff, offering a lifestyle-based solution for a common condition.
-
Spotlight Video: Post-Stroke Care: Activity and Depression – Stephanie Zawada from the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and science summarizes research on how tracking moderate-to-vigorous physical activity can revolutionize recovery and mood management for stroke survivors.
