Bibsam Open Science Spotlight: Exploring Exergames and Active Microbreaks for Health

The Bibsam agreement facilitates open publication of scholarly research results and makes it possible for researchers worldwide to access cutting-edge Swedish health research, accelerating innovation in digital health and beyond. As part of the Bibsam Open Science Spotlight series, this webinar explored how gaming, gamification, and immersive digital experiences can influence health outcomes.
During the session, Aseel Berglund, PhD, Associate Professor at Linköping University, presented findings from a recent study in JMIR Serious Games that examines how different types of movement interactions in casual exergames influence physical exertion, motivation, and psychological well-being.
Study Overview
As workplaces increasingly recognize the importance of employee well-being, exergaming—video games that incorporate physical activity—has emerged as a potential solution to promote movement and reduce sedentary behavior in office settings. Dr. Berglund’s research investigates the effects of various interaction styles in casual exergames and how they impact users’ engagement, exertion levels, and overall mental health.
Key Findings
The study found that movement-based interactions in exergames can significantly influence players’ motivation and physical engagement. Participants reported increased enjoyment and motivation when engaging with full-body motion games compared to games that relied on minimal movement. Additionally, the study suggests that incorporating exergaming into office environments may offer a feasible way to enhance employee well-being and reduce the negative effects of prolonged sitting.
Implications for Workplace Health
These findings highlight the potential of digital health interventions to create healthier work environments. By integrating exergaming stations or movement-based breaks into daily routines, organizations may be able to support physical and mental well-being, ultimately fostering a more active and engaged workforce.
