Leading the Way: A Quarter-Century of Innovation at JMIR Publications

Written by Jane Kelly, Integrated Marketing Manager | Jan 26, 2026 10:00:43 PM

Since its inception in 1999, JMIR Publications has been more than just a publisher—it has been a laboratory for the future of scholarly communication. As one of the world's first open-access publishers, JMIR has consistently pushed the boundaries of how scientific knowledge is captured, shared, and preserved.

From pioneering “Tweetations” to creating the first digital preservation system for cited webpages (WebCite), the JMIR roadmap is a testament to a culture of "firsts."

But innovation doesn't stop. As we look toward the future, JMIR continues to evolve to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing digital landscape. Here is a look at our most recent milestones and how they are shaping the next era of science.

2023: Navigating the AI Landscape

The rise of Generative AI has brought both immense opportunity and significant responsibility to the scientific community. In 2023, JMIR took a proactive stance by publishing Best Practices on the Use of Generative AI.

In an era where LLMs can draft abstracts or assist in data analysis, JMIR’s guidelines provide a vital framework for authors. These best practices ensure that while researchers leverage cutting-edge tools, the core values of transparency, accountability, and human oversight remain at the heart of every published paper.

2024: Bringing Research to Life with "Author Stories"

Data tells a story, but the researchers behind the data have a voice. In 2024, we launched the Author Stories Program. This initiative moves beyond the static PDF, providing researchers with a structured video platform to share the "why" and "how" behind their work.

To ensure these stories are easily accessible to the global community, these videos are embedded directly on the corresponding article's dedicated 'Author Video' tab on JMIR.org. If you have recently published with us and would like to highlight your work through this program, we invite you to contact our team to arrange a video recording. By integrating high-quality video into the publication process, JMIR is humanizing science and making complex research more accessible to clinicians, patients, and the general public alike.

2025: Strengthening the Shield of Research Integrity

As the volume of global research grows, so does the sophistication of threats to scientific quality, such as paper mills and data fabrication. In 2025, JMIR officially joined the International Association of Scientific, Technical and Medical Publishers (STM) and integrated the STM Integrity Hub into its routine operations.

By utilizing these industry-leading tools to detect potential integrity issues before publication, JMIR is reinforcing its commitment to a trustworthy scientific record. This integration ensures that every article bearing the JMIR name has undergone the most rigorous checks available in modern publishing.

A Legacy of Innovation

These newest additions join a long list of JMIR-led breakthroughs, including:

  • 1999: Founding one of the first Open Access journals in history.
  • 2009: Pioneering open peer review and preprint submissions.
  • 2011: Proving the "Twimpact Factor"—the first study to show that social media mentions can predict formal citations.
  • 2019: Launching "Superjournals" (JMIRx).

At JMIR Publications, our mission remains the same as it was 25 years ago: to use technology to speed up the dissemination of knowledge and, ultimately, to improve health outcomes globally. Read more about JMIR's innovations read our full list here.
