JMIR Publications Announces New CEO

(Toronto, February 3, 2025) JMIR Publications, the leading open access publisher in digital health and open science, announced today that Sean Jeong has been appointed as its new chief executive officer (CEO), effective January 23, 2025. Dr Gunther Eysenbach, founder of JMIR Publications, will be stepping down as CEO after over two decades of transformative leadership to focus on new opportunities for innovation in academic publishing, including artificial intelligence (AI)–driven solutions and the advancement of Plan P. He will continue to serve as the editor in chief of the Journal of Medical Internet Research and CEO of Digital Health and Science Ventures, the holding company of JMIR Publications.


Dr Eysenbach is a pioneer in the field of open access publishing and digital health. He founded JMIR Publications in 1999 with the launch of the Journal of Medical Internet Research, one of the first open access journals. Under his leadership, JMIR Publications has grown into a globally recognized publisher, with over 30 journals and a reputation for quality and innovation. Dr Eysenbach has been recognized as the most impactful medical informatician in the world for his contributions to the field. He is a cofounder of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association (OASPA) and a strong advocate for open science.

Sean Jeong brings 20 years of experience in consulting, education, technology, marketing, and the nonprofit sector to his new role. He has a proven track record of success in agile delivery, digital transformation, technical strategy, and program execution. During his four years at JMIR Publications as chief product and technology officer, Jeong established the company's product department, scaled its technology infrastructure, and oversaw financial operations.
