JMIR Publications Announces Expansion of Members Subscribed to Jisc Unlimited Open access Partnership, Empowering More UK Researchers

(Toronto, September 18, 2025) JMIR Publications, a leading open-access digital health research publisher, and Jisc, the United Kingdom's not-for-profit organization providing digital services for research and education, are pleased to announce a significant expansion of their Flat-Fee Unlimited Open Access Partnership. Effective August 1, 2025, 6 new research institutions – the University of Manchester, University of Nottingham, Newcastle University, University of Leeds, University of Southampton, and University of Warwick – have joined this collaborative agreement.

For researchers affiliated with participating institutions, the flat-fee agreement eliminates Article Processing Charges (APCs), simplifying the publication process and removing financial barriers to open access publishing in JMIR’s portfolio of over 30 Gold Open Access journals.

With these new additions, a total of 22 Jisc-member institutions in the UK are now part of the partnership, with 9 joining in 2025 alone. This partnership, which offers a simple and fair model for funding open access publishing, has enabled nearly half of all articles by UK authors in JMIR journals to be published without an APC since 2022, demonstrating a tangible impact on open research dissemination. As an independent open access publisher, JMIR is dedicated to making publishing more beneficial for researchers, ensuring their work reaches a wider audience without the barriers of traditional models.

Authors at participating institutions benefit from a simpler publishing process, allowing them to publish their research under open access licenses without concerns about individual APCs. This initiative directly contributes to creating an environment where research can flourish and contribute to global progress. The new partnerships are in effect as of August 1, 2025, and cover publishing in all JMIR Publications journals until July 31, 2026.
