Body image dissatisfaction and eating disorders pose growing public health challenges globally, yet stigmatization and lack of accessible services prevent many affected individuals from seeking timely help. To address this support gap, researchers co-designed JEM, a rule-based conversational agent delivering evidence-based psychoeducation and psychotherapeutic microinterventions targeting cognitive and emotional processing.

--- **Key Takeaways**
---
High Satisfaction and Usability: Users across Australia and Canada reported high overall satisfaction (76.1/100 and 78.8/100, respectively) and rated the system's usability as "excellent" on the System Usability Scale (86.5/100 and 89.5/100).
Immediate Within-Session Shifts: Completing brief skills-based microinterventions, grounded in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), was associated with immediate positive changes in confidence, body size satisfaction, anxiety, and depression.
Bridge to Further Care: Over 90% of survey respondents found the information they were seeking, and the majority indicated an intention to seek or consider seeking further professional support after using the chatbot. ---

In a [6-month real-world evaluation](https://humanfactors.jmir.org/2026/1/e90783/) published in [JMIR Human Factors](https://humanfactors.jmir.org/), lead author Gemma Sharp and colleagues at [Monash University](https://www.monash.edu/) and the [National Eating Disorder Information Centre (NEDIC)](https://nedic.ca/) evaluated user experiences, usability, and immediate pre-post microintervention outcomes across deployments in Australia and Canada.

### Evaluating Digital Mental Health Microinterventions at Scale

How effectively can structured, rule-based chatbots deliver accessible mental health support outside formal clinical settings? By combining psychoeducation on eating disorders with brief 5-minute skill-building exercises, such as practicing cognitive defusion or unhelpful thought challenging, JEM offers an instantaneous, non-judgmental entry point for individuals seeking guidance.

Analyzing real-world usage across two continents demonstrated consistent engagement patterns among young adults, cisgender women, and nonbinary individuals, validating rule-based conversational agents as safe, scalable digital health resources.

### In the Author's Words

> *"JEM chatbot brings evidence-based education and practical coping skills to people whenever they need them. Our survey respondents in Australia and Canada rated JEM as having excellent usability and experienced high user satisfaction. These users who completed the brief coping skills also experienced immediate improvements in their mood and body image satisfaction, so a great result for evidence-based AI in the real world."*
